Inadvertent
Ball
If at any time
during the play of a hole a player finds that he has accidentally and inadvertently
hit a ball that does not belong to him, he shall proceed as follows:
1. If he is dissatisfied
with his lie, or with the shot he hit just prior to his discovery that he played
the wrong ball, or with any other stroke made thereafter, he may at that point
immediately reveal the unwitting substitution with a suitable statement of regret
for the mistake and delight at the timeliness of its detection and its coincidental
mitigation of an unfavourable playing situation, and then, without penalty, play
a ball of his own from a preferred lie on adjacent ground.
2. If he is satisfied
with his lie and the shot he hit and his subsequent strokes on that hole, he shall
continue, without penalty, to play the misappropriated ball as if it were his
own, and he shall hole out with that ball, deferring until the teeing ground of
the next hole the revelation of the unintentional misplay, which he shall then
announce with an appropriate demonstration of distress over his error and relief
that, due to the delay in its discovery, play on the hole was completed and thus
the score he achieved may stand.
